🎉 It’s finally here! Season 2 of Want To Be Our Neighbour? Today we explore what living in Royalwood, Winnipeg is like. This is part of our living in the South end of Winnipeg, Manitoba series - so you might notice some familiar landmarks.🙌

Royalwood is a 485-acre neighbourhood in the Southeastern portion of Winnipeg that was developed by Ladco starting with Phase 1 in 1992. Phase two followed a decade later. Ladco also developed several other Winnipeg neighbourhoods, namely: Southdale, Island Lakes, and Windsor Park. The neighbourhood was designed to follow the flow of the natural habitation (forest) and river in the area. The area is known for its substantial homes, beautiful walking paths, and close proximity to nature. Royalwood offers the largest remaining riverbank forest in Winnipeg and it is truly breathtaking

Royalwood is a family-oriented area, with 66.5% of the homes in the area having children. It is also a wealthier area in Winnipeg, with an average household income around $170,000 per year. There are very few rentals within the area as 98.5% of the homes within the area are owner-occupied. There is also a higher proportion than average of French-speaking homes within this area.

Royalwood is within the Louis Riel School Division. It does not house any schools within the community. When moving to the area, you will want to pay particular attention to your address if you have specific public schools you would like your child to attend, as school of choice isn’t always an option here.

Services
There are no libraries within the immediate area. However, Louis Riel Library on Dakota Street is not far from the area.

There are two major hospitals within 10 kilometers of Royalwood: Saint Boniface General Hospital located on Tache Avenue and Victoria General Hospital located on Pembina Highway.

Shopping
Shopping is limited within the community of Royalwood. However, the community is in a convenient location in that it is surrounded by many retail stores. The corner of St. Anne’s and Bishop Grandin has a number of big box stores such as: Sobeys, Michaels, and Home Depot. South on St. Anne’s there is a plethora of restaurant options, grocery stores as well as retail stores. St. Vital mall is only a 5-minute drive from Royalwood and features over 160 stores/restaurants. The St. Vital mall boasts stores such as Walmart, Old Navy, London Drugs, and much more!

Entertainment and Recreation
We would be doing the entire area a disservice if we didn't mention Bois-des-Espirits Park first. This urban forest is made up of approximately 117 acres contains five different ecosystems – wetland, oak forest, grassland, aspen forest, and river bottom. It is considered a vital part of the Seine River Greenway that spans 27 kilometers. It also happens to be the largest remaining riverbank forest within the City of Winnipeg and is situated on the frontline of urban sprawl. Recall that 98.6% of this natural habitat remains undisturbed.

Royalwood is also in a convenient location to get out of the city and explore just beyond the perimeter. Alternatively, it is closely located to ample fine-dining establishments, as well as the St. Vital Movie theater if you would like to catch a flick.

Why We Love the Neighbourhood:
It was built AROUND the greenery and natural beauty of the area. If you have ever looked at the area on a map, you can see the winding or even dead-end streets that follow along the parks and green spaces. You may have also noted that much of the land mass within the area is dedicated to water and parks. It is this perfect little pocket of homes centered around nature, yet still in a fabulously convenient location in the city. Definitely worth a look!

It has been said that the forest will stand for as long as the Wood Spirit remains to keep order. So, if you are lucky enough to see one, health, happiness, and good fortune will be yours.
