The incident occurred amid nationwide protests sparked by the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good (a 37-year-old woman) by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026. Rummler, a self-described leftist and member of the activist group Dare to Struggle, was participating in a demonstration outside a federal building housing ICE offices.

According to multiple reports from sources including the Los Angeles Times, People magazine, Democracy Now!, and KTLA:

A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agent fired a "less-lethal" projectile (such as a crowd-control round or non-lethal munition) at close range, striking Rummler in the face/left eye area.

He underwent six hours of surgery. Doctors reportedly removed shards of plastic, glass, and metal from his eye and skull (including a piece of plastic the size of a nickel from his eye), and found fractures in his skull that cannot be fully repaired.

He has stated he is permanently blind in one eye (or both in some accounts emphasizing severity), cannot safely sneeze or cough due to the fractures, and doctors described his survival as a "miracle" given how close a metal shard came to his carotid artery.

Video footage shows him bloodied, being dragged by agents across a plaza, pleading for help, and agents allegedly mocking him before medical aid arrived.
