Lynden is the second largest city in Whatcom County and is located approximately 100 miles north of Seattle, 46 miles SE of Vancouver BC, 15 miles north of Bellingham, and 2.5 miles south of the US-Canada border.
Early Euro-American settlers arrived in the 1860s and the settlement was named after a riverside town in a poem by Thomas Campbell, but the spelling was changed to include a “Y” in Lynden which appeared more aesthetically pleasing. The settlement grew into a community during the 1880s and was incorporated by Whatcom County in 1891. There was significant Dutch immigration in the early and mid-1900s spurring the growth of dairies in the area. Lynden’s Dutch heritage is showcased through its design of buildings on Front st where businesses have been made over in a Dutch theme, including two windmills, as well as local businesses with “Dutch” names and products.
Today Lynden is home to approximately 15,000 residents and is noted for its manicured lawns, Dutch architecture, and abundance of churches. There are a wide variety of job opportunities from agricultural, educational, trucking, financial, and hospitality to name a few. Most of the homes are single-family residence with much of the population owning their homes versus renting. Lynden is served by two state highways, SR-539 which travels north to the Lynden-Aldergrove border crossing and south to Bellingham as well as SR-546 which heads east to Sumas. The city occupies 5.4 sq miles in a wide valley along the meandering path of the Nooksack River which eventually empties into Bellingham Bay to the southwest. The downtown core offers an array of restaurants, pubs, and shops. The area surrounding the town is dotted with raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, and dairy farms. There are 6 public parks around town including the Lynden City Park near downtown, Bender Fields which provides 56 acres of ball fields, and the 236-acre Berthusen Park; a farm homestead donated to the city in 1944. The Homestead Farms Golf Course and Resort is located on the northern side of Lynden and offers a Fitness center, Restaurant, and Pool.
Lynden is also home to the Northwest Washington Fair in August each year; the fair is estimated to draw around 200,000 people from Northwest Washington and allows Whatcom County residents to celebrate the agricultural products, wares, and crafts produced in the region. The NW Washington Fair is regarded as one of the best family-friendly fairs in the state. Other notable events include the Raspberry Festival held each July, the Farmer’s Day Parade, the Lighted Christmas Day Parade, and the Antique Tractor Show.
The Lynden School district is made up of 6 schools, one high school, one middle school, three elementary schools, and an alternative learning school that collectively serve approximately 3000 students. The town is also home to the private Lynden Christian School which serves approximately 1200 students Pre-K through 12th grade on a consolidated campus near the downtown area.
Lynden offers residents a dense suburban town with a vibrant family-friendly community in a beautiful county and farmland setting with many activities and events held throughout the year to showcase its heritage.
