On December 30, 2025, U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM) announced that Joint Task Force Southern Spear, under the direction of Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, executed precision kinetic strikes against a convoy of three narco-trafficking vessels in international waters. These vessels were confirmed to be operated by U.S., designated terrorist organizations and were actively engaged in drug smuggling operations.

Intelligence indicated the boats were traveling along established narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and had recently transferred narcotics between vessels. In the initial engagement, three narco-terrorists aboard the lead vessel were killed. Crew members on the remaining two vessels abandoned ship, jumping into the ocean and swimming away to safety distances. Follow-on strikes then successfully sank the empty vessels, preventing further use for illicit trafficking.
Declassified targeting footage shows an aerial view of the three vessels leaving distinct wake trails on the open ocean, locked under crosshairs prior to engagement. Immediately after the operation, USSOUTHCOM coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard to initiate search-and-rescue protocols for any survivors in the water.

This action is part of the ongoing Operation Southern Spear, a Department of War-directed campaign to disrupt narco-terrorism networks threatening U.S. homeland security. Similar strikes throughout December 2025 have targeted dozens of suspected drug-smuggling boats, resulting in significant disruptions to trafficking routes.
