STORYLINE:
China's President Xi Jinping met Monday with French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the French presidential palace in Paris.

"The world today has entered a new period of turbulence and change,” Xi told the trilateral meeting.

Xi Jinping arrived in France Sunday for a two-day state visit that is expected to focus both on trade disputes and wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

“As two important forces in the world, China and Europe should adhere to their partnership positioning… promote stable and healthy development of China-Europe relations," the Chinese leader said.

French President Emmanuel Macron meanwhile said that dialogue was needed between Europe and China, and that the nations were "at a turning point of our history which forces us to face and overcome structural difficulties.”

Paris is the first stop on Xi's European trip, seeking to rebuild relations at a time of global tensions.

After France on Monday and Tuesday, he will head to Serbia and Hungary.
