HP Z420 Workstation | We will provide a general overview of the Z420 and a deeper dive into the various memory options such as sizes, speeds and compatible types of RAM. In this video, learn more about the memory and CPUs compatible with the HP Z420 Workstation. This is a desktop form factor rocking server components on the inside. You can use the HP Z420 as home office desktop or a gaming PC. Sit back and enjoy the video!

Let's begin with memory. HP's Z420 is a tower workstation running on server memory modules to maximize the overall performance. This system utilizes DDR3 memory and there are eight DIMM slots. There are three types of memory compatible with the HP Z420: ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMM), ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs). You have a few options as far as speeds and sizes for your HP Z420. Speed options include 1066MHz, 1333MHz, 1600MHz or 1866MHz. Size options depend on type of memory. ECC Registered and Load Reduced memory support higher capacities including: 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. the max memory configuration is 256GB (8 x 32GB) DDR3 1866MT/s ECC Load Reduced server memory or 256GB (8 x 32GB) DDR3 1600MT/s ECC Registered server memory. ECC Unbuffered only supports 1GB 2GB 4GB or 8GB. Unfortunately there are no 16GB DDR3 ECC Unbuffered modules. They were never invented. This means the max configuration for HP Z420 is 64GB via (8 x 8GB) DDR3 PC3-14900E with ECC Unbuffered 1866MHz Server Memory. There are 4 Memory Channels total. 2 Memory channels per CPU. Two DIMM slots per memory channel. Each channel is labeled and color coded by HP. Normally the white slot is the 1st slot... however with the Z420 the first slot of each channel is the black DIMM slot. If you were only using 2 or 4 DIMMs, then the proper configuration would be to load all the DIMMs in the black slots. That way all your DIMMs are at the start of each memory channel, which will essentially provide an even distribution. You will not overload one channel and will spread the load around evenly which maximizes performance. We will discuss in more depth in this video and physically load the DIMMs inside our HP Z420 as a helpful guide.
