On November 16, 2023, Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Mitchell responded to a traffic collision, where a 21-year-old woman crashed into the back of a garbage truck. The woman admitted to consuming alcohol several hours prior to the crash, so Trooper Mitchell decided to administer standardized field sobriety tests. The woman was given the opportunity to blow into a portable breath testing device, but declined the voluntary test. She was placed under arrest for driving under the influence and was transported to a nearby police station for an evidential breath test. She initially refused this breath test also, but once she realized the consequences for refusal, she decided to provide a breath sample. The result was 0.138% BAC. She was charged with Operating a Vehicle Impaired (OVI) and for causing a traffic accident. On December 18, 2023, she pleaded guilty to an amended charge of having physical control of a motor vehicle under the influence. She was fined $450 plus court costs, ordered to complete a 3-day Driver's Intervention Program, and complete 16 hours of community service. In addition, her license was suspended for 1 year and she was placed on probation for 2 years.
