In the town of Milburn, New York, a group of four old men who call themselves The Chowder Society, meet once per month, dressed in their finest, to indulge in cigars, drink, and hair-raising tales of the macabre. The men have been friends since childhood, and their queer little habit of inventing horror tales stems from a mutual secret they've been keeping since they were young men: a secret they now fear may be coming back on them, bent on a reckoning.

Meanwhile, on the West Coast, Don Wanderley, a writer and the nephew of a former Chowder Society member who was killed in a strange accident, has just been through the most bizarre chapter of his life. When The Chowder Society writes to him, asking that he come and listen to their story, Wanderley finds nightmares blending with reality. A relentless force they can barely comprehend is bent on their destruction, and perhaps the destruction of Milburn itself.

Peter Straub's supernatural thriller "Ghost Story" is a superbly written tale in the finest tradition of American horror literature.
