Did you know? In the entire Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (Bhagavat Purāṇa) of 18,000 verses, the name of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī is almost never mentioned directly. Except for one hidden reference in the 10th Canto, you won’t find Her name openly. Why is that so?

Our scriptures explain that the speaker of the Bhāgavatam, Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī, was a liberated soul, completely immersed in Krishna-bhakti. He was a staunch devotee of Rādhārāṇī, the very embodiment of divine love and Krishna’s hlādinī-śakti (pleasure potency). Śukadeva Gosvāmī knew that if he even uttered Rādhā’s holy name once, his heart would become so overwhelmed with ecstatic emotions that he would lose external consciousness and enter deep samādhi.

If that happened, the narration of the Bhāgavatam to Parīkṣit Mahārāja could not continue. And remember — Maharaja Parīkṣit had only seven days left to live. Every second was precious. The narration had to continue without interruption so that he could hear the full Bhāgavatam and attain perfection.

That is why Śukadeva Gosvāmī deliberately avoided saying “Rādhā” by name. Yet, Rādhārāṇī’s divine presence is everywhere in the Bhāgavatam — in every pastime of Krishna, in every expression of divine love, in the qualities of the gopīs, and in the spiritual essence of Vṛndāvana. Just as the sun is known by its rays, Krishna is known through Rādhā, His pleasure potency.
