Is the future of production site-specific?
International seminar at Vandalorum with visits to the industry
Monday, 30th May 2016
Welcome to a full day seminar at Vandalorum, Monday 30th May 2016. The day will begin with site-visits to local industry and then continue at Vandalorum with talks with a number of international artists, designers and researchers. The seminar will discuss the artist’s and designer’s relationship to local production industries and ask whether small-scale, locally rooted production could be part of a long-term sustainable development. Can future production become more site-specific – with a clear connection to a specific region, it´s culture, traditions, knowledge and resources? How does research-based design lead this development?
It is our impression that the local industries in Småland are open to letting in artists and designers in their processes. But do the designers and the producers want the same thing? Do they understand each other? Do designers and artists understand the knowledge and potential of the local industries? Do the producers know which artists and designers work in the region and understand their abilities and driving force?

Nya Småland is a collaboration between art institutions and universities in the three regional districts in Småland on initiative of Kalmar Konstmuseum, Kulturparken Småland, Vandalorum and Växjö Konsthall. 2016 is a pilot-year for the project that aims at reassessing the image of Småland by combining contemporary art, design and critical thinking with local knowledge and experience as a means of articulating the current political, social and aesthetic landscape of the region. This first year will include a number of public and non-public platforms as part of formulating several long-term relationships.
Project managers: Jonatan Habib Engqvist and Mike Bode.
The seminar is organised in conjunction to the finissage of The New Map at Vandalorum (April 9th – May 30th 2016). The exhibition is a contribution to the debate on sustainable community development. The products of the future, just like the food we eat, will to greater extent be produced locally, pass fewer intermediaries, be more small-scale and more fair for all involved. In order to visualize the potential of local manufacturing industrial designer and curator Jenny Nordberg initated the project the New Map one year ago. She wanted to show that it is possible to produce in Sweden at a time when both the ethical values of digitalization and globalization offer new opportunities. The exhibition features 39 new collaborations between designers and manufacturers in Skåne and Småland.
