"This is the finest study in oil by him to have appeared on the market in living history and it's in beautiful condition. It has never been on the market since it was bought by the family in the thirties(1930s). It was sold through Christie's then and bought almost immediately afterwards by a member of the Philips family."

"You can see the way, the build-up of the paint, is expressed on panel, because panel is a non-porous support, so the impasto is incredibly noticeable, the way you see the wet on wet, and you see the dark of the curls of the man's hair is co-mingled with the flesh tones that Rubens is applying within minutes of each other. And it's that very, very rapid build-up of paint and the way the different pigments and the different colours cross each other that gives it the spontaneity that makes this type of picture so interesting and so desirable."

STORYLINE:
A painting, never before seen in the United States and last exhibited in 1953 in the Netherlands, is due to go under the hammer at Christie's auction house in London.
"Two Studies of a Young Man," an early 17th century oil sketch by Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens will be up for auction at Christie's on December 6.
It is expected to fetch between 8 to 10 (m) million US dollars during the Important Old Master and British Pictures sale.
Rubens holds the record price for Old Master paintings. In 2002, his "Massacre of the Innocents" (1609-1611) was sold for almost 76 (m) million dollars.
"Two Studies of a Young Man" was acquired in the 1930s by Anton Philips, co-founder of Philips, the Dutch electronic consumer giant, after it was bought at auction.
Anton Philips hid his impressive private art collection in the Hague before the onset of the Second World War, when he fled to New York City.
"This is the finest study in oil by him to have appeared on the market in living history and its in beautiful condition, " said Nicholas Hall, International Director of Old Master Paintings at Christie's.
The model in the sketch is believed to be a contract labourer who was working on Rubens house in Antwerp.
The profile and frontal view, painted in just a couple of hours, are considered to be fine examples of Rubens immense talent.
"It's that very, very rapid build-up of paint and the way the different pigments and the different colours cross each other gives it the spontaneity that makes this type of picture so interesting and so desirable," said Hall.
"Two Studies of a Young Man" will be on view in Moscow and Amsterdam before the December sale in London.
