Bosnian Muslims on Sunday (28/4) gathered in mosques throughout the country to the celebrate the religious holiday of Eid al-Adha - called Bajram in Bosnian. Sheep are traditionally slaughtered during the celebrations, but many Muslims have been unable to observe the festival during the past 4 years of war. However this year Saudi Arabia has donated 10,000 sheep for the Eid al-Adha feast. In the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo, the faithful attended the city's mosques for early prayers before gathering in family groups for the traditional slaughter of sheep. The animal is skinned and cut up. One part of the sheep is
prepared for the family feast while another part is distributed to
neighbours and friends. A third portion is given to the poor. But in northeast Bosnia the first day of the festival was marked by the threat of confrontation. American IFOR troops set up road blocks to stop Muslims crossing into Serb-held territory. Over the past few days Muslims attempting to visit the graves of loved ones in Serb-held cemeteries have been prevented from crossing by local Serbs.
