Описание к видео The Importance of Chile's Pension Reforms

As if we hardly need reminding that Chile’s controversial pension reforms were the focal point of protests at the heart of the civil unrest or estallido social. The private pension system (AFP) has long been a source of public frustration, dating back to its origins under the Pinochet dictatorship.

Chile has often been seen as the Switzerland of Latin America — institutionally stable, economically disciplined — but its glaring inequality has bred lasting resentment, with the AFP system becoming a symbol of that inequity.

On The LatinNews Podcast this week, we speak to Nicholas Barr, Professor of Public Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science, whose work on welfare systems has informed global debates on pensions and higher education reform. Barr shares firsthand insight on Chile's system, its influence across Latin America, and how the country is grappling with reform today.
