The 4,739-ton Shiroganesan Maru was meant to be USS Rasher’s 19th victory. Commander Hank Munson released a Type 14 torpedo. It was an easy target.

But somewhere in the forward compartment, a torpedo operator's hand slipped. The poppet valves were open a second too long. Seawater blasted in, nearly drowning the young sailor where he stood.

Rasher lurched forward violently, plummeting into the deep.
