To demonstrate that it was possible to move these giant statues with rudimentary tools and techniques, Heyerdahl and his team used only ropes, wooden sledges, and a team of islanders to transport a 13-ton moai. They managed to move it 328 feet in only 40 minutes.

This feat was widely publicized and fed into the debate about how the original inhabitants of Easter Island could have moved the statues. While Heyerdahl's experiment did not conclusively prove his theories, it breathed new life into the discussions around the moai and demonstrated that ancient engineering techniques should not be underestimated.

The experiment remains one of the most cited in discussions regarding the enigmatic transportation of the moai, turning Heyerdahl's adventure into an enduring part of Easter Island's complex narrative.
