In this video we look at calculating the stress increase underneath a point inside a rectangular foundation. We are interested in subdividing the rectangular foundation such that smaller rectangles have corners at the point of interest. An influence factor graph based on the length and breadth of these smaller rectangles is used to give us a final value which allows us to calculate the stress increase for the given point.

This video is part of the topic One Dimensional Settlement of Soils where the knowledge from the previous topic is applied in determining the amount of settlement in a one dimensional soil context. The settlement level is closely linked to the voids ratio and applied stresses which are calculated for different foundation types.
