There’s no doubt there will be pain and discomfort after surgery, and every patient will be put on medication to mitigate it. The amount of medicine needed will vary on a couple different things:

• How much surgery is done at one time
• What the patient’s ability to tolerate pain is

A narcotic pain medication will be taken for 1 to 2 weeks, but the doses taken will become lighter at the beginning of the second week, until the patient only needs the medicine at night. Depending on diet and assuming the patient can take Motrin, that will be taken 3 times a day regardless of how much pain the patient is experiencing, because it is a great anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. Motrin works in a different way than the narcotic medication.

In addition, EXPAREL® is injected during the surgical procedure to help with the pain.
