Prairie dogs are “ecosystem engineers” that are hard at work modifying, building and feeding the larger grassland ecosystem. Because of their activity, many other animals also benefit from the small rodent. Prairie dogs construct burrows needed by snakes and birds, are tasty meals for predators, and even help “mow the lawn,” which encourages new growth and plant diversity. Bison love to snack here!
