North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended a ceremony in Pyongyang to welcome troops returning from a 120-day mission in Russia, praising their “heroic” conduct and loyalty to the ruling Workers’ Party. The 528th Regiment of Engineers carried out combat and engineering tasks in Russia’s Kursk region during Moscow’s war with Ukraine. State media KCNA reported nine soldiers were killed, whom Kim described as a “heartbreaking loss.” The regiment received the Order of Freedom and Independence, while the fallen soldiers were posthumously titled national heroes. The ceremony highlights Pyongyang’s growing acknowledgment of its military support to Russia amid the Ukraine conflict.
