Rapid Mix and Flocculation Tank Design Calculations. Flocculation Water Treatment

One step in the treatment of water/wastewater, is to bring about COAGULATION wherein chemicals or coagulants (usually aluminum sulfate or alum) is added to water to bring the non-settling particles together into larger, and heavier masses of solids called flocs.

RAPID MIXING serves to disperse the coagulants evenly throughout the water and to ensure complete chemical reaction. After rapid mix, a longer period of gentle agitation or slow mixing is needed to promote particle collisions and enhance the growth of floc. This is called FLOCCULATION. After flocculation, the water now flows into the SEDIMENTATION tank for the flocs to settle.
