Recently, the head of the Black Lives Matter chapter in New York said, “Crime is caused by poverty.” However, Larry Elder says the opposite is true: Some areas with high poverty don’t have much criminal activity, but areas with a lot of crime tend to have a lot of poverty. In addition, the “war on poverty” in the 60s led to a situation where a much higher percentage of black children were born without both a mother and a father in the home. As Barack Obama said, “Children who grow up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime.”
