Blacksmithing is an incredibly old and traditional craft dating back to at least the Iron Age. I met with Chris Hughes - known as Chris the Smith - to talk about his career as an artist blacksmith and it was fascinating to gain an insight into the blend of the old and the new when it comes to his profession.

Chris has had his own business for over ten years since graduating from the Hereford College of Arts and I was keen to find out all about his journey, how he had come to having his own forge and what a typical day in the life of a blacksmith looks like.

His work largely falls into one of three categories - he produces small artisan pieces which he sells online at a craft and trade shows, he undertakes commission pieces for local customers and he also runs experience days workshops for those interested in trying their hand at blacksmithing.

This is an interesting story for anyone with a love of traditional crafts, practical skills and the idea of working with their hands - Chris has some interesting advice when it comes to gaining experience, trying different things, developing resilience and building commercial awareness.
