Peter Metro Birthday Bash Live Performances: Little John - Josey Wales - Junior Reid - Munga & More Live & Direct in Jamaica 🇯🇲 2024

Prior to deejaying Peter Metro [Peter Clarke] had studied in Cuba and worked with welding. However after grabbing the microphone in the dance a couple of times he realized that people enjoyed his style and he decided to pursue a deejay career. He started deejaying a short while as Peter Ranking, but since there was already a deejay with that name he changed his name to Peter Metro. The Metro part of his name came from the Sound System Metromedia for which he started deejaying, often sparring with ZuZu.

In 1982 he was featured on a split album with Yellowman & Fathead on the Absissa label. This was perhaps the first LP Metro featured on. He was also voted the best Dance Hall Artist the same year.
Peter Metro was known for chatting much of his lyrics in Spanish, a trend that was supposedly started by Early B with »Gone A Mexico« but that became Peter Metros trademark with hit songs such as »Calypso«.

In 1983 he featured on the album Sinbad & The Metric System with Captain Sinbad and the youth Little John. He also performed the same year at the Madison Square Gardens in America with other artists such as Freddy McGregor and Mutabaruka. He was also the first deejay to tour with Reggae Sunsplash in the US.

Peter Metro's & Yellowman's song »The Girl Is Mine« (a cover on Paul McCartney's and Michael Jackson's song with the same name) got banned from radio play due to the altering of the original lyrics »the doggone girl is mine« to »the goddamn girl is mine«. The song »Dedicated To You« was also banned as it was thought of being able to hurt peoples morality when it featured Peter Metro deejaying of how he had »six baby mother in one area«. Both singles where collected and included on the album »Dedicated To You« released in 1984 by CSA records.

In 1985 his first solo album followed, No Problem, a set produced by George Phang and released on his Power House label. The year after he released the album The D.J. Don on Black Solidarity. In 1986 he received the much sought after award of deejay of the year. The same year he toured England with his sound Metro Media - while there he discovered the deejay Dominic with whom he released the song »Listen The Yardie, Listen The Cockney«. The song was a hit for both the deejays and also helped launching Dominics career. In the late 80's and early 90's he recorded several songs for producers such as King Jammy's.
