Charles E. Fleming, AIA, UC ‘61, is the first African American to own a full-service architecture firm in Missouri and has contributed many significant projects to St. Louis and beyond. In 1965, he co-founded the Urban Housing Foundation, dedicated to ending racial discrimination in housing.

The Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis recognized Fleming as one of seven honorees during the 2024 Awards for Distinction. The annual ceremony recognizes Sam Fox School alumni, friends, and leaders in their fields for professional achievement in architecture, art, and design and/or for service to their profession, the community, or the Sam Fox School and Washington University.
