STORY: Some experts claim the Philippines has the world's
fastest-growing population of abused, abandoned and
neglected children. More than a million now actually live
on the streets of the nation, begging, scavenging, stealing
and offering themselves to tourists as prostitutes. Many
blame an overemphasis on tourism for their corruption, but
the root cause appears to be the poverty which continues
to blight the lives of millions despite Corazon Aquino's
People Power revolution. Concern for this lost generation
has been expressed through the various social agencies
which have sprung up, intent on giving the children back
their childhood. One, the Kaibigan Street Children's
Centre, is run by a French-Canadian, Alain Pronovost
and currently helps some two-hundred young people.
