龍門石窟南北長約一公里，主要開鑿於北魏至北宋年間。其中北魏窟龕約佔三分之一，唐代窟龕約佔三分之二，代表性洞窟有北魏古陽洞、賓陽洞、蓮花洞和唐代潛溪寺、奉先寺、看經寺等。兩山現存窟龕2,100多個，造像十萬餘尊，碑刻題記3,600多品，佛塔40餘座，數量之多乃是中國各大石窟之首。
龍門石窟規模宏大，窟內造像雕刻精湛，內容題材豐富。風格遠承印度石窟之藝術，近繼雲岡石窟之風範，並與魏晉南北朝時期深厚的漢族文化相互融合開鑿而成，所以龍門石窟的佛教造像藝術呈現出中國化和世俗化的趨勢，堪稱展現中國石窟藝術變革的里程碑。
The Longmen Grottoes are located 13 kilometers south of Luoyang City, Henan Province, on the east and west mountains on both sides of the Yishui River. Together with the Yungang Grottoes in Shanxi, the Dunhuang Grottoes and the Maijishan Grottoes in Gansu, they are collectively known as the four major grottoes in China.
The Longmen Grottoes are about one kilometer long from north to south and were mainly excavated from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Northern Song Dynasty. Among them, the caves of the Northern Wei Dynasty account for about one-third, and the caves of the Tang Dynasty account for about two-thirds. The representative caves are Guyang Cave, Binyang Cave, Lianhua Cave and Qianxi Temple, Fengxian Temple, Kanjing Temple, etc. in the Tang Dynasty. There are more than 2,100 caves in the two mountains, more than 100,000 statues, more than 3,600 inscriptions on steles, and more than 40 pagodas.
The Longmen Grottoes are large in scale, with exquisite carvings and rich themes. The style is inherited from the art of the Indian grottoes, and the style of the Yungang Grottoes is close to that of the Yungang Grottoes. It was excavated with the profound Han culture in the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties. Therefore, the Buddhist statue art of the Longmen Grottoes presents a trend of sinicization and secularization, which can be called a display. A milestone in the transformation of Chinese grotto art.
