A veteran Labour MP has urged Sir Keir Starmer to dismiss his Attorney General, Lord Hermer, arguing that the Prime Minister made a mistake by appointing his long-time friend to the House of Lords. Graham Stringer, the MP for Blackley & Middleton South and a strong Eurosceptic who previously served as Lord Commissioner of the Treasury under Sir Tony Blair, is the first Labour MP to call for the removal of the Government's chief legal officer.
In an interview with the BBC, Mr. Stringer stated, “I believe the Attorney General should never have been appointed to the House of Lords. He lacks democratic experience, especially when he is responsible for significant decisions that require all laws to be reviewed by him. He has spent billions on the Chagos Islands, and the Attorney General should be in the House of Commons for accountability reasons, particularly given the policies he is pursuing.”
Lord Hermer, who has been friends with Sir Keir since the 1990s, has been instrumental in the transfer of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, a deal projected to cost up to £35 billion over 99 years.
