A recent report from @Hilton says travelers expect to maintain many of the technical efficiencies they gained during the pandemic. Not just shopping and doing business online, but also how they experience the physical world. And for travelers that means avoiding lines and instant access to information via our devices. The Hilton report titled the 2022 traveler: emerging trends and the redefined traveler, says what began as online check-in and check-out is quickly expanding into additional services such as selecting rooms by floor plan, unlocking multiple areas of the property such as fitness centers and pools, and electronic payment for on-property services via phones, watches, or tapping credit cards.

Contactless travel is a new benchmark. In a study by black-box research, 76% of travelers indicated their preferred travel destinations would have airports offering touch-less identity and clearance experiences. The move toward digital keys is so popular that Hilton now delivers over 1 million digital keys per month to its guests. And now travelers can easily share those digital keys with friends and family via their phones. No one wants to stop by the desk and request another key that someone lost. Electronic delivery of services should mean less traffic at the front desk, less stressed employees, and more satisfied guests. But providers need to be careful not to turn their guests over to technology. Personalized service is still the hallmark of great hospitality. But now, it can focus on higher-value services such as pairing guests with the right local attractions, restaurants, and wellness. That sounds like progress.
