On May 30, 1868, the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), an organization of Union veterans, established the first official national Decoration Day. The date was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of a particular battle, and flowers would be in bloom across the country. On that day, General John A. Logan, the head of the GAR, led a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, where thousands of people decorated the graves of over 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers.
