Duck, the Great Western Engine, works very hard on the Island of Sodor. Whether he is pulling coaches, pushing freight cars, or shunting in the yard, he always does the work quickly and without complaining. One day, Sir Topham Hatt comes to see Duck in his shed and thanks him for all the hard work he has done. Sir Topham Hatt asks Duck if he would like to have his own branch line to which the Great Western Engine happily accepts.
Taking charge of his new branch line, Duck is happy at being given such a big responsibility. He finds that the line runs along the coast by sandy beaches till it meets a port where big ships come in. Duck enjoys exploring every part of the new line as well as being close to the sea, remarking that it is just like being on holiday. His driver remarks that a change of scenery is just as good as having a rest and soon, Duck is busier than ever. Sir Topham Hatt is building a new shed at Tidmouth Hault, and as Duck helps with the construction, his passengers are looked after by Bertie while some of the other engines help too. However, it is a long job, but thanks to everyone pitching in, the shed will be finished in no time.
Duck is still feeling the importance of his new responsibilities, and enjoys talking endlessly about them. One night in the shed, he starts telling Donald how important he is to the line now. Donald is sleepy after a hard day's work, but when Duck carries on Donald accuses him of quacking like an actual duck to the point that he sounds like he is going to lay an egg. Duck was very cross at the rude joke and tells his crew the following morning. Duck's fireman comes up with a plan to pay Donald back, and he tells Duck and the driver. They all agree on it, but soon Duck and the other engines are back at work for the rest of the day and nothing more was said. That night, however, when Donald goes to sleep, Duck's driver and fireman pop something into the Scottish engine's water tank.
The next morning when Donald stops for water, his crew are astounded when a small white duckling pops out of his water tank. Donald sees the funny side of the joke, and the duckling is friendly towards him and the crew and is allowed to ride in his tender, despite the other engines often teasing him about her. The duckling soon tires of travelling and hops off at a station which is where she will end up staying.
That night, Donald's crew decides to pay Duck back, and in the morning when Duck's crew arrive to look him over, they find a nest box with an egg in it under the Great Western Engine's bunker and burst out laughing. Donald jokes that Duck must have laid it in the night, and Duck admits defeat, knowing that Donald has won and it would take a clever engine to get the better of the Scottish engine.
The duckling enjoys swimming and playing in a pond near the station where she can see the engines passing by. The stationmaster calls her Dilly, but to everyone else, she will always be Donald's duck.
