Originally directed by Christopher Guest with a more character-focused tone, the movie was shelved for nearly a year and subjected to re-edits that drastically altered its original vision. The ending was reshot, slapstick was amped up to mimic the success of Tommy Boy, and Parker Posey’s role—originally a key part of the film—was almost entirely cut. The result was a disjointed final product that bore little resemblance to what was originally filmed.
