What to know before buying carpet for your home

While hardwood floors are the big design trend right now, there's still a strong demand for carpet, which is why many stores sell both. But shopping for either can be challenging. There's not only a wide range of product choices, there can be huge differences in price. A Checkbook.org survey of Puget Sound area customers also found huge differences in the quality of the sales and installation staffs.

Regardless of where you shop for carpet the more you do your homework, the more you'll avoid the common carpet buying mistakes. Top mistakes include buying on impulse, not understanding how carpet and padding are measured, ignoring how your lifestyle will affect wear and tear, not factoring in how lighting in your room will affect the color of carpet you see, not being crystal clear about pricing, and not preparing ahead of time for the installation.

Some people for example, mistakenly assume that carpet installers will automatically move all the furniture. But you have to ask. Moving big furniture typically involves added charges because furniture removal involves more time and wages.

Daniel Stralberg's company, Vogle's Carpet & Flooring , is one of the local retailers to get top Checkbook ratings in the latest Puget Sound area survey. Stralberg says moving furniture, unplugging electronics and clearing a room of smaller items - is almost like moving house.
