There are good and bad forms of bioenergy. For example, there is almost no comparing biodiesel made from waste vegetable oil, versus corn ethanol made using coal for process heat. One powerful tool we can use to discern the difference between good and bad bioenergy is called carbon life cycle analysis (LCA).

LCA is a technique to assess environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a product's life, from-cradle-to-grave. In the case of bioenergy, impacts often considered include growth, harvest and collection of the biomass feedstock, energy consumed during materials processing, manufacture, distribution, conversion into energy and co-products, the embodied energy of the conversion system, and the efficiency of conversion.

On this webinar, we will feature two speakers: Jesse Daystar, President, Triangle Life Cycle Assessment, will give an overview of carbon LCA as applied to bioenergy, and he will describe an example of how LCA can guide businesses to make better decisions for their bottom line and the climate. Dr Adam Taylor, Assistant Professor, University of Tennessee Knoxville will present recent analysis comparing wood pellets made from mill waste versus wood pellets made from pulp wood.
