Adam MacDonald from Seagulls Central reacts to Brighton and Hove Albion’s defeat to Everton.

Albion suffered a frustrating 2-0 loss in their first visit to the new Hill Dickinson Stadium, despite perhaps creating enough chances to take all three points. For Fabian Hurzeler’s side, this was an afternoon where missed opportunities and fine Everton finishing told the story, leaving the Seagulls empty-handed in the Premier League.

Brighton started brightly and controlled large spells of the first half. Kaoru Mitoma clipped the crossbar with a clever effort, while Jan Paul van Hecke also struck the woodwork. Danny Welbeck, leading the line, squandered a golden chance from just six yards after good work by Yankuba Minteh. Everton’s Jordan Pickford was already being called into action before Jack Grealish’s cross was turned in by Iliman Ndiaye against the run of play. That goal swung momentum and silenced Brighton’s strong early pressure.

The second half brought more frustration for Brighton. Just seven minutes after the restart, Grealish again played provider, finding James Garner, whose long-range thunderbolt gave Everton a two-goal cushion. From then on, Brighton were forced to chase the game. They did carve out a route back when Minteh’s strike struck the arm of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, earning a penalty. Welbeck stepped up but was denied by England goalkeeper Pickford, who guessed correctly and pushed the ball away to effectively seal Everton’s victory.

For Brighton fans searching YouTube highlights or Premier League match clips, this was a reminder of football’s fine margins. While Everton were clinical, Brighton lacked the ruthless edge in front of goal. Hurzeler will take encouragement from the chances created, particularly from the lively Mitoma and the pressing of O’Riley in midfield, but will demand more composure in finishing.

This defeat leaves Brighton looking for a response in their next fixtures. The Seagulls travel to Oxford United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, 27 August before hosting reigning champions Manchester City at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, 31 August. With Brighton aiming to challenge for another strong Premier League finish, the importance of turning chances into goals will be clear. Supporters will hope this setback proves only a small bump in their ongoing journey under Hurzeler.
