Описание к видео Vintage Passport Collector: Kingdom of Prussia Passport Booklet 1883 Germany

In the 1880s, traveling from Germany to Vienna (with this passport) was a complex and challenging endeavor. Germany was a collection of independent states at the time, each with its own set of laws and regulations, and crossing national borders required careful planning and preparation.

To begin with, travelers needed to obtain a passport from the government of their home country. This document contained important information about the traveler, including their name, nationality, and destination. It also had to be stamped and approved by the appropriate authorities in each state they passed through.

Once they had their passport, travelers had to plan their route carefully. The most common method of transportation in the 1880s was by train, and the railway system was expanding rapidly throughout Germany and Austria. However, train schedules and connections could be confusing, and travelers needed to be sure they had enough time to make their connections and arrive at their destination on schedule.

Traveling by train also meant dealing with customs and border checks. At each border crossing, travelers had to present their passport and answer questions from the authorities. They might also need to pay fees or tariffs for goods they were carrying with them.

Once they arrived in Vienna, travelers had to navigate a new city with its own customs and language. Many travelers stayed in hotels or boarding houses, which provided a home away from home and often included meals and other amenities.

Despite the challenges and uncertainties of travel in the 1880s, many people still enjoyed the adventure and excitement of exploring new places. The opportunity to see different cultures and landscapes was a rare and valuable experience, and people were willing to endure the hardships of travel to have it. Today, travel is much easier and more convenient, but the spirit of exploration and discovery that drove travelers in the past still lives on.

I believe Germany was one of the first countries, if not the first, to use passport booklets. The earliest booklet in my collection is from 1863 from the Kingdom of Saxony, printed by Gieseke & Devrient.
