Welcome to the May 2025 episode of Matnum. We begin right away with the monthly word hunt. The three randomly selected keywords from the photo collective are: member, discussion, and age. Use these as prompts to go out and take photos—alone or with friends—and optionally share them online with the corresponding hashtags. It’s just a way to practice and stay creative.
We then move to the first virtual film contact sheet from ViCa. ViCa recreates the feel of shooting film with your phone. This virtual roll features a mix of presets like Bomb Baba, FJ, and 02, producing a variety of effects—flash details, urban textures in Reykjavík, color zone artifacts, and aliasing caused by computational processes. You’ll notice shifts in texture and color, like a sunset in Frankfurt or geese on a path, all contributing to a unique virtual film look. The full contact sheet and QR code are available to load this style into ViCa, Camare, Digital Pola, or DarkCam.
The second virtual roll uses RDR and MEDCC presets. Shot with a longer-format camera, it gives a distinctly digital grain and contrasty color mapping. Examples include the Bay of Geneva, a grain silo in Vaud, and various vertical compositions that test framing. There’s a dramatic handling of highlights—especially skies—that resemble posterization. Some shots date back to November, reinforcing the idea of rediscovering forgotten rolls over time, like at Østre Gasværk in Copenhagen or the west coast of Reykjavík. Again, QR codes are provided to reproduce these looks.
Next, we explore Kamare’s random preset generator. Featured images include a Reykjavík concert where a digital-mechanical hybrid instrument was played. The rendering, using Bombber Baba and Paula Laurel, creates rich textures. Other shots include artist Tom Manuri at Space Odyssey using RD Pepure for a crumpled-paper effect, or the same scene processed in Kamare’s experimental editor with Dolce, MECC, and DNA filters—each producing very different results.
Another example: two wide-format pictures of Reykjavík’s coast. One combines Galbell and Katie Addin 200+, resulting in unusual purple-yellow zones. Another version uses Bowie and Katie Might CCD, again changing the tone entirely. The diversity of output from small tweaks to insaturators and filmulators shows the power of this modular editing process.
More presets follow: a lone tuft of grass rendered with Crunchies or Bowie, each reducing colors in unique ways. A Reykjavík church processed with Ono or Maplade shows how filters can darken, distort, or soften the scene. Other experiments include views of Manchester—a pigeon, a circus near the airport, and architecture—each modified through Herate, Dolce, Semi, or more classical approaches like Rondi with KDC C100N.
A final example demonstrates how dramatically different a single image can look: from crisp textures with Arguable, to map-like skies with DDNAZ, to blue-heavy tones with Haven and KDT32. Even photos of brick buildings in Manchester are transformed—one version blurry with Randy, another detailed with DNAZ, and a third in sharp, high-contrast color.
We wrap up with a few more shots: a dimly lit bar rendered with Cano and KDE100, and a familiar window processed in two experimental ways that shift how light is represented. QR codes for all presets are included for you to try.
