Recent decades have seen the emergence of the bioeconomy to address pressing societal needs including healthcare, food and energy. However, conceptualisations of the bioeconomy, its pathways and intended outcomes diverge vastly across the globe. In one framing, the bioeconomy is posited as essential to sustainable transitions away from fossil fuels while maintaining economic growth, that is, a bioeconomy in support of capitalism. In contrast to technocratic framings, another strand of scholarship and practice positions the bioeconomy as a pathway of social-ecological (re)connection and regeneration. This framing seeks to resist extractivist capitalist logics by grounding economic activity in reciprocal relations with land, biodiversity and diverse knowledge systems. Aligning more closely with Indigenous and local worldviews of interconnectedness, embodied wisdom, ethics of care and commoning, the bioeconomy is conceptualised as part of a broader transformation of consumption, governance and knowledge towards post-growth alternatives of ecological and social justice.

This webinar brings together researchers from the University of Cape Town, Natural Resources Institute Finland and the University of Sydney to share the conceptual underpinnings of post-growth alternatives to the bioeconomy, North-South perspectives on barriers to transformation and pathways to change.
