TROPE is an Anglo-French partnership between Carol MacGillivray and Bruno Mathez who met at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2011. TROPE represents a combination of unique talents; blending animation, audio and music with computing, crafts and engineering. This blend of skills resulted in the invention of the D-Scope®, an experimental new medium that creates the immersive perception of animation of real objects unmediated by screen or camera. TROPE construct audio-visual collages of a scale where an audience can move freely, experiencing the artworks in a synesthetic and embodied way. The artworks mix analogue and digital seamlessly, choreographing elements in time that is elastic and reversible, evoking a hypnotic simplicity that belies their underlying complexity. These are not artworks that can be understood through being viewed on a computer screen; to fully comprehend them, ‘You have to be there’.
