Wildlife experts are investigating mass Canada goose deaths in southern Manitoba, with hundreds of carcasses discovered, some frozen in waterways. Avian influenza, specifically the H5N1 subtype, has been detected in some birds, although the high mortality rate is unexpected given the virus's presence in Canada since 2021. Niverville, Lockport, Winnipeg, and other areas have reported die-offs. The Manitoba government advises against touching sick or dead birds. 54 out of 726 tested birds carried the H5N1 strain, which can affect humans, but Health Canada says the risk to the general public remains low.
