The tree viper (Atheris) is found in tropical climates of sub-Saharan Africa, excluding South Africa.

It is between 40 and 78 centimeters long and has a triangular head covered with tile-like scales, making it look like a smaller version of an ancient beast. The eyes are larger than those of other snakes, and the dorsal scales cascade in a sequence that resembles the tips of a raised keel, which are basically perforated. Tree viper venom contains a strong neurotoxin that can cause pain, swelling, and abnormal blood clotting in wounds. Tree vipers are ovoviviparous, with the female's eggs incubating inside her body before being produced outside.
