Lifelong Grief is Real

first of all—I hear you. And I need you to know this: Lifelong grief is real. You’re not broken for still feeling it. You’re not ‘stuck.’ You’re not doing it wrong.

We live in a world that tries to put grief on a timeline. Six months. A year. Maybe two if they’re feeling generous. And after that? They expect you to ‘move on.’ But what happens when the loss wasn’t just a moment—it shaped your entire life?

You lost your dad at 2 years old. That’s not just grief—that’s the absence of something you never got to fully have. And yet, people expect you to be ‘over it’ by now?

This is exactly why I have a problem with things like Prolonged Grief Disorder. Because grief isn’t just about missing someone—it’s about how their absence reshapes your entire world.

Grief isn’t a disorder. It’s a human response to love and loss. You don’t just ‘get over it’ because a textbook says you should. There is no ‘right way’ to grieve. No magic deadline where the pain just disappears.

I’ve been grieving my son for 10 years. And I will carry that grief for the rest of my life. Not because I’m broken. Not because I’m ‘stuck.’ But because that’s what love does—it doesn’t just end when someone is gone.

We don’t ‘move on’ from people we love. We move forward with them. And when that love is something we never got to fully experience? Yeah, that grief stays with us in different ways, at different times, for life.

Grief isn’t a phase. It doesn’t just disappear because time passes. It shifts. It evolves. It shows up in new ways at different stages of life. And sometimes, it hits you harder years later than it did when you were younger.

And here’s the thing—that’s normal. You’re not ‘stuck in the past.’ You’re carrying something real. And it’s okay to still struggle with it.

So instead of asking ‘Why am I still grieving?’ Try asking ‘How do I want to carry this grief in a way that honors my dad?

Maybe it’s sharing his story.
Maybe it’s allowing yourself to feel without guilt.
Maybe it’s recognizing that this grief isn’t just pain—it’s proof of love that still exists."*
