Composer and music educator James Humberstone (b. 1974) was born in London and educated at the University of Exeter, the University of Sydney, the University of Western Sydney, and the University of New South Wales. His major teachers include Philip Grange, Ann Boyd, and Andrew Schultz. Since 1997, Humberstone has lived in Australia where he has worked actively in the fields of music technology and music education. He led the Australian education and support teams for the Sibelius music notation software program and has held a number of teaching and administrative positions in various educational institutions. Humberstone’s output as a composer is influenced by his research background in experimental music (especially the music of Howard Skempton, on whom he wrote his research thesis) and his great interest in composing music for children and community ensembles.
