Описание к видео Are Big Tech Companies Like Palantir Making Societies Safer?

Ever get the feeling you’re being watched?

From facial recognition-enabled security cameras and automatic license plate readers to smart doorbell systems, mass surveillance has become mainstream.

Doorbell camera footage was arguably the first breakthrough in the high-profile investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of prominent US journalist Savannah Guthrie. But it also raised serious questions, as the Guthries had not subscribed to or consented to the company recording, collecting, or storing their data.

During ICE operations in the United States, agents openly admitted to using facial recognition technology not only to track undocumented migrants but also to record protesters and ordinary citizens.

AI data companies such as Palantir argue that their technology makes society safer and more efficient. Critics counter that it encroaches on civil liberties and erodes democratic norms.

On this episode, we ask:
Is a degree of surveillance necessary to keep people safe?
Where is the line between surveillance for safety and the weaponization of data?
And is this technology necessary to compete in the global tech arms race?

Guests:
Dr. Rumman Chowdhury, CEO and Founder of Humane Intelligence and former United States Science Envoy for Artificial Intelligence during the Biden administration.
Joey Meugniot, Strategic Political Advisor and military veteran.
