In this long-form episode, I spend several days alone in the Arctic tundra, building a secret bushcraft survival cabin by a remote lake, using only hand tools and natural materials found on site. Far from roads, electricity and signals.

I slowly build a hidden survival shelter designed to withstand extreme winter conditions, while cooking simple but hearty meals over an open fire, sleeping in the cabin, and embracing a quiet, minimalist life in the wild. This shelter is meant to serve as a safe resting place after long days of hunting, fishing, and exploring the tundra.

Shelter & building philosophy

The cabin is built almost entirely from natural materials sourced locally.
All the wood comes from dead pine trees, and moss was carefully collected from multiple areas to avoid damaging a single location. The goal was to practice low-impact bushcraft while respecting the surrounding environment.

The only modern materials used are:

A tarp integrated into the roof for insulation and water protection

Around ten steel nails to reinforce the structure for harsh Arctic winters, where temperatures can drop to -40°C

I also reused two metal pieces found near an old abandoned training track, likely once used for hunting practice.

Wildlife awareness & safety

This area is home to large wildlife, including moose and bears. Before sleeping, I walked around the camp with a torch to spread human scent and reduce the risk of animal encounters. A bear spray was also kept nearby as a last-resort safety measure.

The hardest part of the build

The most challenging task was digging the foundation. The cabin is relatively large, and working the frozen, compact ground required intense physical effort. I also hoped to collect enough bark to reinforce the roof, but very little was available within a three-kilometer radius.

What’s next?

I plan to return during winter for hunting and ice fishing, and to further improve the cabin with a more efficient stove. This is an ongoing bushcraft project, and more episodes will follow as the shelter evolves through the seasons.
