Miani D. Shira, MLA from Ampati representing the All India Trinamool Congress, on February 27 said there were discrepancies in the numbers provided by the government regarding stone quarries in Meghalaya.

Speaking to EastMojo after the Assembly session, the MLA said her question was aimed at getting clarity on the number of legal stone quarries operating in the state.

“From all of the answers that we received from the honourable chief minister, we could see that there was some kind of discrepancies regarding the numbers, the legal stone quarries, and all of that. But he has promised to furnish it to us, to all the members, whatever queries we had. He didn't have the numbers. So, we'll be waiting for that numbers to come in,” she said.

The MLA said the purpose of raising the issue was to understand whether the relevant legal provisions were being implemented.

“See, that is the reason why we brought in this question also. The entire idea of bringing in this question was to have a clearer picture as to the number of queries that are there legally in the entire state. And to have an idea as to what the government is doing whether the relevant sections of the relevant act is being implemented or not. So, according to the honourable chief minister, he said, ‘Yes. Yes.’ to all of our queries,” she said.

She also added that the situation on the ground would need verification. “So, on the ground whether that is really the case, we can verify it soon enough.”

Responding to concerns about illegal stone quarrying and coal mining, particularly in Garo Hills, Shira said the issue required close monitoring to ensure enforcement of laws.
