Mambo and stickball: Today they are relics of a golden age in New York history. But in the 1950s they were the twin passions of the Puerto Rican communities in the Bronx and Spanish Harlem.

At 81, Bronx native Orlando Marin remains intimately entwined with both. One need only visit the Museum of the City of New York to find Marin commemorated in the Stickball Hall of Fame. And it’s just as easy to find him with his orchestra performing Afro-Cuban dance music to enthusiastic crowds all over town.

Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez and Machito are said to be the “big three” mambo masters, but Marin, who is marking his 65th year as a bandleader, is quick to note that “if they had a fourth, it would’ve been me.” Most of mambo’s legendary figures have passed on, but the self-proclaimed Last Mambo King is still going strong. “Today,” Marin says, “I am the last one left.”

El mambo y el ‘stickball’: hoy en día son reliquias de una época dorada en la historia de Nueva York. Pero en los años 50 eran pasiones gemelas de las comunidades puertorriqueñas en el Bronx y en el Barrio. Ya con 81 años de edad, el natural del Bronx Orlando Marín se mantiene íntimamente involucrado en ambos. Basta apenas visitar el Museo de la Ciudad de Nueva York para encontrar a Orlando Marín conmemorado en el Salón de Fama del Stickball. Es igual de fácil encontrarlo con su orquesta tocando música afro-cubana por doquiera en la ciudad. Se dice que Tito Puente, Tito Rodríguez y Machito eran los ‘tres grandes’ maestros del mambo, pero Marín, quien ahora celebra 65 años como líder de orquesta, no tarda en señalar que “si hubiera un cuarto [rey], sería yo.” Casi todas las figuras legendarias del mambo han fallecido, pero el auto-proclamado Ultimo Rey del Mambo sigue con fuerza. “Hoy”, dice Marín, “soy el último que queda.”
