In this hands-on tutorial series, you’ll build a complete employee portal from the ground up using Spring Boot and React with Vite. Starting with a simple unauthenticated API, you’ll gradually add features including session-based authentication, database-backed login with Spring Data JPA, and role-based access control to secure your endpoints. On the frontend, you’ll connect everything with React, using Axios for API requests and the Context API for managing global state.

You’ll finish by implementing robust JWT-based authentication and refresh tokens, giving your app a modern and scalable security model. This course gives you the practical experience needed to apply secure development practices in real-world fullstack projects.

In this chapter, we integrate Spring Security into our backend and build a working session-based authentication flow. We configure the security layer with a custom SpringSecurityConfiguration class, convert the EmployeeService into a UserDetailsService, and implement an AuthenticationController to handle login requests.

On the frontend, we set up global authentication state using React Context, build a reusable authentication service, and simplify API communication with a custom useAxios hook. We also create a fully functional LoginPage along with form, button, and loading components. Finally, we connect the login form to the backend, test the login flow, and display the logged-in employee in the layout.

By the end of this chapter, you'll have a complete login system using session-based authentication across both the frontend and backend.
