Including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) into your business strategy will allow you to find emerging business opportunities while acting responsibly.

The SDG are a global, multi-oriented and transversal plan of action at a social, environmental and economical level adopted at the UN SD Summit in Sept 2015.
But the UN SD Summit was not the first occasion:

Back in 1972, the UN Member States decided to organise every decade a summit where to study the social and environmental issues and challenges. These summits are informally known as the Earth Summits.

Two of the milestones were:
the adoption of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development and the Agenda 21 at the Earth Summit in June 1992
the Millennium Development Goals established at the UN Millennium Summit in September 2000.

In 2015, 8 MDG have been replaced by the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and its 17SDG and 169 targets.

The 5 principles of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda:
People – no poverty and hunger
Planet – fight degradation
Prosperity – fulfilling lives and progress: economic, social and technological
Peace – peaceful, just and inclusive societies
Partnership – global solidarity and participation of all stakeholders

The role of businesses is mentioned all through the Declaration. But it is important to recognize that all SDGs may not be relevant to every business. Companies should assess impacts, risks and opportunities – with sector and geography being key factors – to determine the most significant and strategic goals they can address.
