If you’re starting, or don’t have much experience yet I really recommend you to start in one of groundworks and frame contractors and the best would be some medium to big project so there will be already few engineers. You will be busy and probably you will have to work overtime, but at the same time you won’t be expected to do everything and you will learn fast. Some of many companies to check ⬇️

👉Very first thing when you’re starting on site I actually expect you to ask questions. The more you ask the less mistakes will happen and the more you will learn. Your first responsibilities will be definitely setting out and the very first will be the levelling. It looks like the easiest job, but any mistake with levels is actually a big on so you really want to be sure what you are doing.
Levelling 👇
As a setting out engineer you will be actually expected to take the information from the drawings and in this case that would be mostly GAs. Depending on what stage of project you will start you might be asked to set a level for drainage, pile caps, or later when the frame is up it’s typically just decking level and then concrete level. When levelling you need to remember that in case of groundworks and drainage you don’t only need the invert levels, but you need to know all the build ups – pipe concrete surrounding as you gonna be digging to the bottom of it and in case of manhole you need to know the base thickness to you set the correct level.
As built 👇
Your next job would probably as built surveys especially if you’re starting work as a junior, or assistant engineer. This way you will know the site, where the targets are and give me actually chance to see what level are you and how you’re working 😊 For this you need to know the survey programme on Total station and you can check one of my videos covering it. If you come on site as a setting out engineer you might be asked to set out straightaway, but I myself if possible try to give people some time to know the site, look at the drawings etc.
Setting out - stake out 👇
Then you will be doing real setting out and that would be staking out the points and marking the lines. Same as before depending on what stage of project you will be joining you might be asked to stake some points – like manhole position, or piles. For this you need to know how to use stakeout programme using a total station and you can check on of my videos covering these.
Marking lines 👇
Next will be marking lines and dependant on the stage of the project these might be anything really and this will be mostly your fulltime job 😊 You’ll be marking all concrete lines like pile caps, drainage runs, columns, slab edges, beams. You will be using a reference line and depending on what equipment is available to you you’ll be working with manual, or robotic station. You can check one of my videos on this as well.
Lines and levels that’s all they need–sounds easy right 😊 In reality you to be a good engineer you need to be comfortable with the laser levels and EDMs (total station). The level of confidence will come with time of course and the more you do the better.
