I was one of those people that thought that I was being a good person by putting others before myself. Growing up I saw the people I looked up to give their time, energy, money, and attention from empty cups. Ignoring your own needs to satisfy others was a badge of honor and deemed to be a high value characteristic.

But honestly, it didn’t bring many positive things into my life. Yes, I was considered a trustworthy person, but how I felt inside was drained which led to resentment. When it came time to put time into myself, all I wanted to do was rest or distract myself. There wasn’t any balance.

People didn’t receive it well at first, and it was hard to feel like I was disappointing someone. But I started to notice that when the time came to be there for those that I love, because I put my rest, my goals, and my values first, I was a lot more giving, patient, and more attentive because it came from a place of abundance.
